Grooming gangs: Councils only 'persuaded to probe abuse after bad publicity' as local authorities fear becoming 'another Rotherham'

Councils are often only persuaded to investigate local grooming gang scandals after “bad publicity,” a leading voice on child abuse has said.

Prof Alexis Jay, the chair of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, told the Home Affairs Select Committee that some councils did not want to become “another Rotherham.”

Speaking to the Home Affairs Select Committee, Jay said that her report into Rotherham, which was published in 2014 and found that at least 1,400 children had been abused by gangs of predominantly Pakistani men, took “a lot of persuasion that this was the right thing to do.”

Jay took questions from Robbie Moore, the Tory MP for Keighley and Ilkley, who asked Jay on how to ensure local inquiries are launched when local authorities resist them.

Referring to her report into Rotherham, she said: “That was non-statutory, it was not expensive, and it took 10 months.”

Moore said: “But that was with the will of Rotherham council to do that.”

But Prof Jay said: “It took a lot of persuasion that this was the right thing to do. Ultimately people are persuaded, as I’ve learned in this a lot, they’re generally persuaded by bad publicity.

“If they won’t do it because it’s the right thing to do, then sometimes bad publicity will set that.”

Giving evidence in parliament, she continued: “I have heard it said in other places … ‘we will not be another Rotherham.’ That doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, we will not be, in other words there will be a kind of collusion not to commission such reports.”

She said: “I’m simply giving you a possible explanation … but I know that it has applied in other places, that by having an inquiry you may actually be causing the area to be represented in a way that’s not desirable.”

Her comments that local authorities struggling with grooming gangs abuse might not investigate unless there is “bad publicity” comes after the government rejected a national inquiry and promoted more local reviews.

John O’Brien, the Secretary to the Inquiry, said: “In the six areas that we looked at, two of them reported that they had not only no grooming gangs but almost no instances of organised child sexual abuse at all. But of course they did, they just didn’t record it.”

He added: “What was recorded was generic abuse, not sexual abuse.”

He continued: “If you go up and down the country, I have no doubt at all, you will find areas that have all sorts of grooming gangs, and there will be all sorts of ethnicity involved depending on the area you look at.

“But can you possibly quantify it because the data won’t support it? The areas we looked at, they looked us in the eye and said we don’t have any.”

He said that “data throughout the inquiry was the bane of our lives” and that getting accurate data was a “nightmare.”

Earlier in the hearing, Prof Jay said that the first response she received after publishing her inquiry in 2022 was positive, but worsened significantly in 2023.

She said that what she heard from Grant Shapps, Liz Truss’s home secretary, made her feel “much encouraged”.

But she said that the written response to her report in May 2023 was “awful.”

She told MPs: “It was awful. I cannot tell you how it felt to constantly read the response, when we got the final printed version of the government’s response.”

The response, written when Suella Braverman was home secretary, was described by Jay as “It “inconsequential, insubstantial, committed to nothing.”

She continued: “And the wording that was used very often amongst the 20 recommendations was ‘we accept the need for’ whatever it was, but made no specific commitment. The reaction of all of us, but mostly victims and survivors, was such huge disappointment and anger.”

Yvette Cooper announces public inquiry after failures of anti-extremism scheme to prevent Southport murders

Yvette Cooper has announced a public inquiry into how Southport killer Axel Rudakubana "came to be so dangerous" after the 18-year-old pleaded guilty to the murders of three young girls on Monday.

The Home Secretary said Britain must "face up to why this has been happening and what needs to change" with an inquiry to find out the "truth".

Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, died following the horrific attack at the Taylor Swift-themed class before midday on July 29.

Rudakubana also pleaded guilty to attempting to murder eight other children and two adults, including dance instructor Leanne Lucas and businessman John Hayes.

Yvette Cooper

Cooper confirmed the 18-year-old had “contact with a range of different state agencies throughout his teenage years” before carrying out his “meticulously planned rampage”.

It comes after Rudakubana had been referred to the Government anti-extremism scheme Prevent three times before he stabbed the three young girls to death.

He was referred to 'Prevent' due to concerns about his obsession with violence, though he was found not to be motivated by a terrorist ideology.

In a statement, Copper said: "The families and the people of Southport need answers about what happened leading up to this attack.

"The perpetrator was in contact with a range of different state agencies throughout his teenage years. He was referred three times to the Prevent programme between December 2019 and April 2021 aged 13 and 14.

"He also had contact with the police, the courts, the Youth Justice system, social services and mental health services. Yet between them, those agencies failed to identify the terrible risk and danger to others that he posed."

She added: "We also need more independent answers on both Prevent and all the other agencies that came into contact with this extremely violent teenager as well as answers on how he came to be so dangerous, including through a public inquiry that can get to the truth about what happened and what needs to change."

Sir Keir Starmer previously said there are “grave questions” to answer about how the state failed the Southport murder victims.

The Prime Minister said: “The news that the vile and sick Southport killer will be convicted is welcome.

Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine

“It is also a moment of trauma for the nation, and there are grave questions to answer as to how the state failed in its ultimate duty to protect these young girls.

“Britain will rightly demand answers, and we will leave no stone unturned in that pursuit.

“At the centre of this horrific event, there is still a family and community grief that is raw, a pain that not even justice can ever truly heal.

“Although no words today can ever truly convey the depths of that pain, I want the families to know that our thoughts are with them and everyone in Southport affected by this barbaric crime. The whole nation grieves with them.”

'My voice cracked!' Farage holds back tears after contacting mother of freed British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari

Nigel Farage has made contact with the mother of the now-released British-Israeli hostage Emily Damari.

Damari, 28, was one of three hostages released by Hamas following a ceasefire deal signed off by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Farage met Damari’s mother in the Houses of Parliament last month in an attempt to raise awareness for the 28-year-old.

Speaking just hours after her release, the Reform UK leader told the People’s Channel: “I’m delighted. I just sent a voicenote to Mandy, the mother."

Farage discussed Damari's release with GB News

Holding back the tears, Farage added: “I’d say my voice cracked halfway through it because what can you say?

“It’s great news. She looks okay. I feel for her, I feel for the mother.

“Do you know why I feel for her so much? Nobody knew there was a British hostage.

"No one was prepared to stand up and speak, so I met her [Mandy Damari] in the House of Commons.

“I did my best to make people aware of what was happening. I’m thrilled for her. Goodness me, I felt for her.”

Mandy Damari, mother of sole British hostage in Gaza, Emily Damari

Farage campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness for Damari, warning in December: “Almost nobody knows that we have a British citizen being held captive.”

He even slammed Foreign Secretary David Lammy for allegedly focusing on giving aid to Gaza rather than focusing on returning Damari to safety.

Damari was released earlier today alongside 24-year-old Romi Goren and 31-year-old Doron Steinbrecher.

The three women were abducted during Hamas’s horrific October 7 attack in 2023.

Romi Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher were released

The attack, which left 1,200 Israelis killed, saw the Palestinian terror group snatch around 250 people before taking them into captivity in Gaza.

Damari was in her own apartment in Kfar Aza kibbutz in Israel, just two miles from the Gaza border, when she was taken prisoner in 2023.

Hamas troops entered her home and shot her golden cockapoo Choocha dead, later taking her to the Strip.

Damari’s mother, Mandy, said that she was "shot in the hand, injured by shrapnel in her leg, blindfolded, bundled into the back of her own car" and driven into Gaza.

Nigel Farage and Mandy Damari

Following her release earlier today, Mandy Damari said: “After 471 days Emily is finally home.

“I want to thank everyone who never stopped fighting for Emily throughout this horrendous ordeal, and who never stopped saying her name.

“In Israel, Britain, the United States, and around the world. Thank you for bringing Emily home.

“While Emily’s nightmare in Gaza is over, for too many other families the impossible wait continues.

“Every last hostage must be released, and humanitarian aid must be provided to the hostages who are still waiting to come home.”

Sadiq Khan sparks bitter row as Labour activist backs ‘far-right’ claims: ‘STOP interrupting!’

Labour activist Aisha Ali Khan and GB News host Nana Akua have clashed over London Mayor Sadiq Khan's warnings about "resurgent fascism" ahead of Donald Trump's second inauguration as US President.

The heated exchange followed the London Mayor's stark warning yesterday about a "century-defining battle against a resurgent far-right" across the developed world.

In his Observer article, Khan called for ministers to confront extremism as "hard-right figures" gather for Trump's upcoming inauguration.

The debate between Khan and Nana centred on the mayor's characterisation of so-called far-right influences and Trump's supporters, with both women offering sharply contrasting views on the legitimacy of Khan's concerns.

Nana Akua, Aisha Ali Khan

Labour activist Aisha Ali Khan explained the long-running tensions between Trump and the London Mayor date back to 2015.

"You've got to understand the relationship between Donald Trump and Sadiq Khan, the spat that they've been having, it's not just a recent thing. It's been going on since 2015, when Donald Trump still was obviously campaigning and he made comments about imposing a muslim ban in the US," Ali Khan told GB News.

She highlighted how Khan had experienced "absolutely vile" racist abuse during Trump's presidency and social media presence.

"He actually felt that with Donald Trump in office and using his platform as president, but also on Twitter and other platforms, he was encouraging racist attacks," she said.

Sadiq Khan

Ali Khan warned the next four years would be "challenging" given previous experience of Trump's presidency.

She said: "Obviously going forward, Donald Trump is going to be president again, and the next four years are going to be challenging. We've already had a taste of what it was like under his presidency for four years, and we kind of know the kind of people that have supported him, people that are far-right and alt-right."

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

GB News host Nana Akua strongly challenged Ali Khan's characterisation of Trump supporters.

"No no, you yourself have just said that the people who supported him are far-right. Some of them may be far-right, some of the people may be far-left who are supporting Sadiq Khan," Nana countered.

She criticised what she called "lazy politicking" in labelling those with different opinions as far-right.

"Donald Trump won the popular vote as well. Ethnic minorities, black, white, women, everybody voted for him, it was a landslide," Nana argued.

Aisha Ali Khan

She questioned the broad application of the term "far-right" and challenged Ali Khan's characterisation of Trump's support base. Ali Khan defended her position, clarifying her earlier statement about Trump's support base.

"First of all, I said some some of the support. Some of the supporters that supported Donald Trump and have supported him all along are members of the Alt-Right, the far-right in the US, and they have been emboldened," she explained.

The exchange grew more heated as they debated the nature of political discourse.

Ali Khan suggested politicians needed to be resilient to criticism, stating: "It's offensive though, isn't it? If you're going to decide if you're going to enter politics and you're going to meet people and so on, you cannot be this sensitive."

'Undermining public confidence!' Jenrick demands investigation into Starmer's Attorney General over 'conflict of interest' row

Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick has penned an “urgent” letter demanding answers over Attorney General Lord Richard Hermer's potential conflicts of interests.

Jenrick, who sent the letter to Cabinet Secretary Sir Chris Wormald, is putting pressure on Lord Hermer over his role in the Government's decision to drop a winnable appeal against paying Gerry Adams compensation.

The letter puts the Labour Government in the spotlight just days after Tulip Siddiq tendered her resignation over separate conflict of interest allegations concerning her links to her aunt Sheikh Hasina’s recently-ousted regime in Bangladesh.

In his letter to the Cabinet Secretary, seen by GB News, Jenrick said: “The Attorney General has properly declared his previous position as a barrister at Matrix Chambers in his ministerial interests.

Attorney General Lord Richard Hermer

“However, it has been widely reported that Lord Hermer has recently represented clients in matters which remain live issues for His Majesty's Government, and for which, in these or related matters, it is reasonable to assume the Attorney General's Office would have been, or will be, asked to provide advice.”

The Shadow Justice Secretary also highlighted Lord Hermer’s representation of Sri Lankan asylum seekers in the Chagos Islands, ex-Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, Afghan families associated with the ongoing Afghan inquiry and parties interested in Shamima Begum’s citizenship case.

He added: “These matters raise serious questions about the management of potential conflicts of interest at the highest levels of Government legal service. The implications extend beyond the specific cases to any matters broadly connected to these areas of policy and law.”

Jenrick is demanding answers on whether formal procedures have been established to manage potential conflicts of interest and for a date as to when procedures were implemented.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick

The Shadow Justice Secretary’s questions in full:
1. What formal procedures have been established to manage these potential conflicts?
2. When were these procedures implemented?
3. Has the Attorney General recused himself from any matters since taking office?
4. Given the public interest in the specific matters set out above, has the Attorney General recused himself from each of these and any related matter? For example, the decision of HMG not to appeal Dillon & Ors [2024] NIKB and the ongoing negotiations with the Government of Mauritius over the future of the Chagos Islands?
5. What mechanism exists to record and monitor such recusals?
6. Has any advice been provided on matters connected to his previous cases?

Attorney General Richard Hermer and Leader of the House of Lords Baroness Smith leave 10 Downing Street

Jenrick specifically accused the Attorney General of not “fully” recusing himself after Lord Hermer described the UK as having an “obligation” regarding the Chagos Islands.

Lord Hermer has so far refused to disclose if he advised ministers on a series of cases, after Labour last week announced plans to repeal a law that blocked Adams from claiming compensation for his detention in the 1970s.

Concluding his letter, Jenrick said: “Refusing to provide direct answers to these questions and to those put to the Attorney General by the Justice Select Committee risks undermining public confidence in the Attorney General's Office and the rule of law itself.

“I request that you investigate these matters and revert to me as a matter of urgency. The urgency is compounded by the fact that several of these matters represent some of the most contentious issues in our political and legal life at present, with significant implications for public expenditure and national security.”

GB News also understands that Jenrick could seek further correspondence with the Prime Minister independent adviser on ministers' interests Sir Laurie Magnus in the future.

Speaking to the People’s Channel earlier this week, Jenrick raised concerns about the Attorney General’s potential role in the Government's decision to drop its High Court appeal.

Robert Jenrick

He said: “We need to know what was the role of the Attorney General, did he recuse himself or did he have a massive conflict of interests by getting involved in this case when he was previously the lawyer of Gerry Adams.”

Lord Hermer previously represented Adams in a case concerning the victims of three IRA bomb attacks.

He also unsuccessfully took the UK Government to court in 2023 on behalf of a group of Sri Lankan asylum seekers trying to get to Britain from the Chagos Islands.

The five migrants, who were part of dozens who had made it to the Anglo-American base at Diego Garcia, hoped to enter the UK before the action was dismissed by the High Court.

However, just months after Lord Hermer became Attorney General, the Government decided to grant a "one-off" deal to allow all 61 asylum seekers to come to Britain.

A spokesman for the Attorney General's Office said: “The public can be assured that there are rigorous systems in place to ensure that law officers (who have extensive legal background and a wider number of past cases) would not be consulted on any cases that could give rise to a conflict of interest.”

A Government spokesman added: "There are well established rules governing ministerial interests and conflicts, and as Robert Jenrick's own letter makes clear, the Attorney General has properly declared interests from his previous role.

"These rules sit alongside rigorous and long standing protocols to ensure all Law Officers are not consulted on issues that give rise to conflicts of interest."

Trump tipped to deliver 'Brexit-style' message in 'different' inauguration speech

Donald Trump will deliver a Brexit-esque second inauguration speech in a bid to "sell the message for change", a former Republican strategist has told GB News.

Adam Goodman told the People's Channel that the speech will show a more confident Trump and hinted that there could be a rally for unity in the address.

Trump is set to re-enter the White House on Monday, just months after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024's US Presidential Election.

While the swearing in ceremony has been moved inside the Capitol Rotunda due to a poor weather forecast, Trump will address supporters at a rally at the Capital One Arena.

Adam Goodman gave his insight into what we could expect to see in Trump's second inauguration speech

Goodman, who hosts the 13th and Park podcast, told GB News: "The speech should be about bringing the country together. It's supposed to be about unification. And maybe in 2017, that missed the mark as a speech.

"I think there's a different Donald Trump in play here than it was in 2017. I think he's more leavened, he's more aware of what he can do and how he can do it.

"Also, I think he's more confident. Remember when he came to power in 2017, he was an outsider. He had to figure his way around Washington, around the process and and and to figure out who he needed.

"I think he felt probably, as successful as he likes to say his first term was, he also knows, in his heart of hearts, he missed some opportunities, and he learned from that. And in 2025, you're going to see a different Donald Trump. The speech is going to be about not just unification, but change. He means it."

LATEST ON TRUMP'S RETURN TO THE WHITE HOUSE

Donald Trump will return to the White House on Monday

Goodman also drew a line of comparison between Trump and Brexit, saying that the President-elect is going to sell change "from day one".

He added: " The speech is going to be about not just unification, but change. He means it. A lot of people talk about how 'Yeah, I fix this. I'm going to fix that. I'm going to change the world.' His entire campaign, his entire motivation for being President, even from the very beginning, has been about massive, effective, real change.

"We've had conversations before about Brexit, and about how Brexit was almost a cry for change in the in the United Kingdom. Trump is going to be selling that message from day one, starting with the inaugural speech.

"He'll be doing the speech differently than he had before, he's got a team of players behind him that are completely united in helping him deliver that."

President Donald Trump

Earlier this week, Trump's former top strategist Steve Bannon predicted an intense start to the second Trump presidency.

He told Politico that Tump’s second term will be even more intense, marking a departure from the rapid, often random policy-making that marked his first term.

Bannon said: "I tell people, ‘shock and awe was a ‘17 concept.’ ‘Days of thunder,’ I think are gonna be the concepts starting next Monday...and I think these days of thunder starting next week are going to be incredibly, incredibly intense."

'We expect transparency!' SNP-run Glasgow BLOCKS public from hearing details of 'secret' cash donation

The public has been blocked from rooting out the details of a “classified” cash donation to Glasgow City Council.

Members of the public along with local democracy journalists were asked to leave the council chamber while elected officials discussed the donation in private, following the advice of officials.

It is understood that the mystery organisation had requested anonymity and the public would not be informed about the size of the donation, its origin or what purpose the money will serve.

A report issued to councillors by Glasgow’s Director of Economic Growth, Kevin Rush, the city’s Community Empowerment Team and Chief Executive suggested they had been in talks with an “external organisation regarding a possible donation to the council”.

Susan Aitken has served as Leader of Glasgow City Council since 2017

As the SNP-led council is a public sector organisation, donations are typically included in normal local authority business and are therefore accessible by the public.

Nevertheless, council officials have taken on the requests of the donor and non-elected officials taking part in discussions have been asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Glasgow City Council has been working within a challenging shortfall of funding in recent years, reporting a £110million budget black hold back in 2022, around 80 per cent came from inflated council worker pay.

Scotland’s biggest city responded by hiking parking fees and fines, while cutting jobs and some public service hours to keep the lights on.

Though a cash donation of any size would be a welcome investment in the city planning to host next year’s Commonwealth Games, the cloak and dagger theatrics around the donation has given some Glaswegians cause for concern.

Labour MP for Glasgow East, John Grady, has written a three-page letter to the head of Glasgow City Council, Susan Aitken, to ask her to elaborate further on council plans to keep the donation under wraps.

He wrote: “Accepting the donation on condition that the identity of the donor and related key details are not disclosed would make it difficult, if not impossible, for my constituents and other interested third parties to assess whether the donation created any conflict of interest.”

“More generally,” he said, “my constituents are entitled to expect transparency in connection with decisions of the Council. The acceptance of donations on the basis that key details about the donations will be kept secret is very concerning from a transparency perspective."

Glasgow City Chambers

Cllr Susan Aitken has pushed back on the discourse surrounding the donation, clarifying that confidential discussions are not simply “secret” and that both elected officials and non-elected officials under NDA are able to discuss the donation with “full transparency” and “have nothing withheld from them”.

Glasgow’s Director of Economic Growth put forward his report to the council on Thursday, which advised members of the council to exclude the public and press from witnessing the meeting discussing the “commercial negotiations relating to a disclosed donation to the council”.

On the advice given by the city’s Director of Legal and Administration Committee, the reason given was because the meeting was likely to disclose “the financial or business affairs” of the donor and therefore gives grounds to hold the session in private.

However, as pointed out by the MP for Glasgow East, the lack of transparency around the issue does not sit well with everyone.

As the story began to surface on social media platform X, user Tommy Taylor wrote: ”Every financial transaction by or given to the council should be public domain on a public ledger. Time for full transparency.”

“The people of the city should know who we are accepting charity from and whether or not we wish to accept it,” wrote Robert Beckett, while user Tony Watson posted, “I’m more interested in where the money is going and what it’s spent on.”

At present, a decision is yet to be made on the city’s position on accepting the donation.

'Astonishing!' Welsh Tory leader demands national grooming gangs inquiry after Senedd interjection in fresh blow to Labour

Welsh Conservative leader Darren Millar has called the interruption of his address on grooming gangs in the Welsh Parliament "pretty astonishing" following a heated exchange two days ago.

Speaking to GB News, Millar said the public "were not impressed" with the interjection from Speaker Elin Jones during his questioning about sexual exploitation.

The Conservative leader is pressing for either a Wales-wide or national inquiry into grooming gangs, citing evidence of such criminal activity in the Swansea area.

"We need to know here in Wales that there's not another Rotherham or a Rochdale happening on our doorstep," Millar told GB News.

Darren Millar

The dramatic scene unfolded when Speaker Elin Jones repeatedly interrupted Millar as he questioned Labour First Minister Eluned Morgan about grooming gangs.

Jones first intervened when Millar referenced a South Wales victim's case, claiming he was being "overly descriptive" and "verging on not being respectful of the victim".

When Millar insisted he was "just stating facts," Jones sharply disagreed, warning him to avoid "inflaming any kind of discrimination".

Speaking to GB News, Millar claimed that the interjection was "astonishing", as he was "trying to shine a light" on the problem.

Darren Millar

Millar stated: "It was pretty astonishing, and the public have made it clear that they were not impressed with that interjection.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"What I was trying to do was to shine a necessary light on the problems that we've got here in Wales."

Millar pointed to findings from Professor Jay's inquiry that uncovered evidence of grooming gangs operating in the Swansea area.

He also highlighted current concerns, citing a Crime Stoppers national campaign in Wales addressing exploitation of young people.

"Young people as young as 11 and 14 have been offered vaping products in return for sexual favours, not just by one individual but by a number of individual in flats upstairs of their local shops," Millar told GB News.

The Welsh Conservative leader criticised the Government's approach, saying they had "simply accepted the assurances" of South Wales Police and local authorities.

Darren Millar

Millar emphasised the need to put party politics aside on the issue, welcoming news of MPs speaking out against their party lines to support an inquiry.

"I am determined to make sure that the things which have happened when people have blown the whistle on these issues in other parts of the UK and they've been told to be quiet because of community tensions, I'm determined to make sure that those things don't happen here in Wales," he said.

The Conservative leader called for cross-party support of survivors' campaign for a comprehensive investigation, stating that "insufficient investigation" had occurred thus far.

He stressed the importance of understanding "the extent of the problems in Wales" to address them effectively.

Ethereum Pectra Upgrade to Launch on March 2025

In Brief

Ethereum targets March 2025 for the Pectra upgrade, featuring eight key enhancements, including wallet and staking improvements.

EIP-7702 introduces programmable wallets, while EIP-7251 raises the staking cap from 32 to 2,048 ETH for validators.

Testing on Sepolia and Holesky networks is set for February, with mainnet deployment expected by mid-March if testing succee

Ethereum developers have set March 2025 as the target for deploying the Pectra upgrade. The timeline was finalized during the Execution Layer Meeting on January 16.

The meeting outlined key steps leading to the mainnet activation.

The Long-Awaited Ethereum Pectra Upgrade

The much anticipated Ethereum Pectra Upgrade will bring significant improvements to the network. It will combine eight Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) into a single upgrade.

Among the notable changes is EIP-7702, which improves wallet functionality by enabling them to act like programmable smart contracts.

This improvement, based on an idea from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, is part of efforts to simplify wallet use and implement account abstraction.

“Ethereum developers plan to launch the Pectra mainnet upgrade in March 2025, with testnet forks on Sepolia and Holesky scheduled for February. Developers have conducted short devnets and launched the Mekong testnet in November 2024 to test key components ahead of the mainnet rollout,” wrote crypto influencer Scott Melker, aka Wolf of All Streets.

Another major change is EIP-7251, which increases the staking cap for validators from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH. This adjustment eliminates the need for validators to split stakes across multiple nodes. This will streamline the staking process and reduce setup delays.

Currently, validators with stakes exceeding 32 ETH must operate numerous separate nodes. Validators often face long queues for activation.

The Pectra upgrade is Ethereum’s first major overhaul since the Dencun update in 2024. It was initially planned as the largest hard fork in the blockchain’s history. However, developers decided in September to scale back the scope of the upgrade by splitting it into two phases.

Testing on the Sepolia and Holesky test networks is scheduled for February. If all tests proceed as planned, deployment to the mainnet is expected in early to mid-March.

ETH Remains Unimpressive in the Bull Market

Despite the announcement, Ethereum’s market performance has shown limited growth. Over the past week, ETH saw only a 4% increase, underperforming Bitcoin’s 10% gain. Other altcoins like XRP has shown stronger growth

Overall, Ethereum’s price has remained below $3,800 since January, and its market dominance continues to lag amid broader consolidation trends.

In a related development, Buterin shared additional proposals last October to address centralization risks in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake system. His suggestions include splitting block production tasks and revising staking incentives to preserve decentralization.

Also, Buterin highlighted the dangers of over-staking and recommended adjusting the issuance curve to maintain network security.

'Taking freedoms away!' Bridget Phillipson accused of 'not trusting' school leaders by Britain's 'strictest headmistress' amid reforms

Britain's "strictest Headmistress" has launched a fresh attack on Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, accusing the Labour minister of "taking away" freedoms of the country's school leaders.

In an open letter to Phillipson, Katharine Birbalsingh expressed her concerns that the minister's time in office will "destroy the huge gains made over the last decade and a half" in "helping disadvantaged children across England".

Birbalsingh stated: "I don’t know if you are being ideologically blind and therefore ignoring the obvious negative impact of your decisions – or perhaps you just don’t understand the harm your changes will cause.

"I am hoping it is the latter and I am writing to offer my advice and help so that you might see that the road you are taking will have catastrophic consequences for the poor in this country."

Bridget Phillipson, Katharine Birbalsingh

Speaking to GB News about her letter, Birbalsingh said that she "cannot understand" the changes planned to be implemented by Phillipson, and how they will "fix the problems" she claims are in Britain's education system.

Birbalsingh explained: "I just don't understand what they're trying to fix. All of the various reforms that she's making will destroy the great changes that have been made over the last decade that have resulted in England rising to the top. We are now considered top in the Western world.

"I don't understand why she would want to take freedoms away from academies, when it's precisely these freedoms that have brought about this success."

Highlighting the impact of one of Labour's provisions in the Bill, which will force all schools and academies to "follow the national curriculum", Birbalsingh stressed that school leaders will be unable to "make the right judgements" for their pupils and cater to their "bespoke needs".

Bridget Phillipson

Birbalsingh fumed: "Different schools have different intakes, different challenges, with regard to hiring staff, their buildings, and what they can offer.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"The idea that it should just be the same for everyone no matter what, and that we headteachers are unable to make the right judgements to give children a bespoke offer that is tailored to their needs, that instead the diktat should come down from centralised Government telling us what to do, whether or not we can or can't do it according to our building or our funding or our intakes."

She added: "There's so much that obviously goes into making a school successful, I just don't understand why she doesn't trust us headteachers to make the right decisions."

Highlighting the success of Birbalsingh's own school, the Michaela Community School in Wembley, the headteacher was asked by host Miriam Cates why she believes her recent successes were not congratulated by Labour or Phillipson herself.

Birbalsingh told GB News: "I really can't explain it, I don't understand. I suppose maybe she sees us as a free school, as a success of the previous government.

Katharine Birbalsingh

"She didn't want to be caught out recognising that the previous government had done something good, which is really sad that politics can be so tribal."

Warning Labour of the direct impact on teacher employment as a result of the Schools Bill, Birbalsingh claimed that retention levels will "drop" due to "taking away freedoms" for school leaders with her reforms.

Birbalsingh concluded: "There are issues with recruitment, and retention is a huge issue for schools and continues to be.

"That is something that the Conservative government did not address, and it's something that she could look to address.

"But actually with her reforms on taking away academies freedom around pay, it's quite likely going to cost teachers massively in terms of their salaries.

"She's making it so that if you take away the freedoms that headteachers have and that school leaders have and that teachers have, we're going to have a larger problem when it comes to recruitment and retention."

Bitcoin Rebounds Strongly from $89,000 Dip, Eyes Major Breakout

In Brief
Bitcoin’s MVRV Ratio at 1.32 reflects bullish sentiment, with holders enjoying an average unrealized profit of 32%, supporting recovery.
Resilience during the $89,000 dip, with unrealized losses below 4 million BTC, confirms the bull market remains intact.
BTC must breach $102,235 for an 11% rally to $113,400; failure risks a drop below $100,000, targeting $95,668 as critical support.

Bitcoin recently recovered from a correction that pushed its price to $89,000, reigniting bullish momentum in the market.

While the drop was alarming, it didn’t significantly impact market sentiment. Bitcoin now stands stronger than before, poised for a potential rally to new heights.

Bitcoin Investors Are Still In Profit
The MVRV Ratio, currently at 1.32, reflects Bitcoin’s positive market sentiment. This metric, which compares Bitcoin’s spot price to its realized price, shows that the average BTC unit holds an unrealized profit of 32%, according to a Glassnode report. This is reminiscent of post-ATH behavior in mid-April 2024, highlighting bullish sentiment despite the recent correction.

Additionally, Bitcoin’s MVRV Ratio aligns with the market’s recovery trajectory, reflecting traders’ confidence. Even after the correction, the positive sentiment persisted, suggesting that investors remain optimistic about BTC’s long-term potential. This metric supports Bitcoin’s current path toward breaking key resistance levels and forming a new rally.
Bitcoin’s unrealized losses have shown remarkable resilience, even during its dip to $89,000. Historically, unrealized losses above 4 million BTC indicate the onset of a bear market. However, the recent correction didn’t push unrealized losses beyond this threshold, affirming the active presence of a bull market.

This stability demonstrates that Bitcoin holders are not succumbing to market pressure, maintaining their positions despite short-term fluctuations. Such behavior aligns with a bullish macro environment, increasing the likelihood of a sustained upward trend in Bitcoin’s price.
BTC Price Prediction: Rally Ahead
Bitcoin’s price currently stands at $101,394, nearing the neckline of a double-bottom pattern visible on the daily chart. A breakout above the $102,235 neckline could trigger an 11% rally, targeting $113,428. This pattern reinforces Bitcoin’s upward momentum and signals its readiness for another major rally.

To achieve this target, Bitcoin must establish support at $106,193 or $108,341. These levels are crucial for sustaining the rally and preventing a reversal. Securing these supports would solidify BTC’s bullish thesis, encouraging further investor confidence.
However, failing to breach $102,235 could spell trouble for Bitcoin. Such a scenario could lead to a drop below $100,000, with the next critical support at $95,668. This would invalidate the bullish outlook, potentially setting the crypto king back significantly.

Suella Braverman refuses to rule out defection to Nigel Farage’s party as she draws on ‘common ground’ between Reform and Tories

Suella Braverman has refused to rule out defecting to Reform UK just weeks after the ex-Home Secretary’s husband joined the populist party’s ranks.

Braverman, who mulled over standing for the Tory leadership in the 2024 race to replace Rishi Sunak, also stopped short of confirming if she would still be a Conservative MP at the end of this Parliament.

Responding to a lifelong Tory voter who just left the Conservative Party, Braverman told The Telegraph: “We let many of our lifelong supporters, just like Trevor. We let them down on immigration, mainly, but also on other things.

“We oversaw a 70-year high tax burden, and we failed to properly take on the politically correct, virtue-signalling woke virus, to use Elon Musk’s words, that has taken over many of our schools and our public services and our Civil Service.”

Suella Braverman

She continued: “I was a Conservative Party member from the age of 14. I’m also a lifelong Conservative voter, I want a Conservative Prime Minister, I want a Conservative Government. And ultimately, in British politics, there isn’t space for two conservative parties.

“So we need to find an accommodation. There’s no way that we’re going to stop Labour.

“If Reform is polling [at] 26 per cent and we’re on 24 per cent, that is a recipe for another five years of Labour. So we need to think about what we do about this problem.”

Braverman also said the Tories made the "wrong decision" to expel ex-deputy chairman Lee Anderson.

Anderson, who then defected to Reform UK and later retained his Ashfield seat in the 2024 General Election, lost the whip after being embroiled in a row with London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Nigel Farage

Braverman added that there is "lots of common ground" between the two right-wing parties, highlighting her agreement with Farage on leaving the European Convention on Human Rights.

However, in her first speech of 2025, Tory leader Kemi Badenoch yet again dismissed calls for a pact between the Conservative Party and Reform UK.

Speaking in London, the Leader of the Opposition said: "Nigel Farage says he wants to destroy the Conservative Party. Why on earth would we merge with that?"

Reform UK chairman Zia Yusuf has also downplayed talks of a merger, comparing the populist party joining forces with the Tories to Netflix merging with Blockbuster.

Suella Braverman

However, speculation about Braverman potentially switching to Reform UK comes just weeks after her husband Rael jumped ship to the populist party.

Responding to her husband's defection, the Fareham & Waterlooville MP said: “My husband and I have a healthy respect for each other’s independence – he doesn’t tell me how to do my job, and I don’t tell him how to pick a political party.”

Earlier this month, GB News also revealed that Reform UK is attracting Conservative bigwigs due to Farage's pre-existing relationships with veteran Brexiteers.

Speaking to the People’s Channel at Reform UK's East of England conference, Yusuf said: “We have seen huge growth in those seeking to defect to Reform, despite no outreach efforts.

"This is because they can see Reform is finally breaking the two old parties’ stranglehold on British politics and are willing to stand up for British people.”

A Reform UK source added: “They’re coming to us. We’re not going to take everyone but they’re just as fed up as the country is.”

HashKey Group 2025 Predictions: Bitcoin to Surpass $300,000, New ETFs, and More

In Brief

  • HashKey predicts Bitcoin could surpass $300,000, while Ethereum is expected to exceed $8,000.
  • AI agents, Layer-2 solutions, STOs, and CBDCs will reshape technology, scalability, and financial inflows.
  • Approval of ETFs, Bitcoin as a US reserve asset, and FIT21 Act breakthroughs will solidify crypto’s global role.
  • Social Trading. Copy trading. Smart Portfolios. All you need to trade smarter at eToro.

  • HashKey Group has revealed its top 10 market predictions for 2025. The leading digital asset management and financial services provider shared insights derived from a community-driven voting process.

The predictions reflect potential milestones in cryptocurrency adoption, regulatory advances, and technological innovation.

HashKey Shares 10 Milestones to Watch in 2025

Describing 2025 as the “gateway to the Golden Decade of Web3,” HashKey Group Chairman and CEO Dr. Xiao Feng emphasized that regulatory compliance, traditional capital inflows, and technological breakthroughs will play pivotal roles in shaping the market.

“With regulatory compliance taking center stage, a surge in traditional capital inflows, and accelerating technological breakthroughs, the cryptocurrency market is poised for extraordinary growth,” he said.

With this, the firm shared research findings detailing predictions from a nine-day voting period. It cites responses from nearly 50,000 community members who weighed in on 16 forecasts curated by HashKey researchers, analysts, and traders.

Bitcoin and Ethereum Surge to Record Highs

First, HashKey anticipates Bitcoin and Ethereum surging to record highs. Bitcoin, often referred to as “digital gold,” is predicted to surpass $300,000, while Ethereum, dubbed “digital oil,” is expected to exceed $8,000. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization is projected to reach a staggering $10 trillion, marking unprecedented growth.

    Rise of Decentralized Exchanges

The digital asset manager also predicts the rise of decentralized exchanges (DEXs). Specifically, it forecasts DEXs to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) agents and meme-driven strategies to significantly increase market share.

Meanwhile, centralized exchanges (CEXs) are likely to adopt DeFi strategies, attracting capital with high-yield investment products.

    Stablecoins Reach New Heights

Further, HashKey says stablecoins could reach new heights, with their market capitalization exceeding $300 billion. It cites the demand for compliant, yield-bearing, and real-world asset (RWA)-backed stablecoins as the potential fuel for this growth.

  • $3 Trillion Inflows from STOs, ETFs, and CBDCs

The research also predicts $3 trillion in inflows from STOs (security token offerings), ETFs (exchange-traded funds), and CBDCs (central bank digital currencies). Such an outcome would bolster the overall value of the crypto market.

    Explosive Growth in AI Agents

It also forecasts that AI agent applications will drive significant advancements in data storage, collaborative networks, and decentralized verification systems, reshaping the technological playing field.

    Layer-2 Solutions

The Layer-2 (L2) ecosystem is also expected to bifurcate into two main categories: application-specific chains and general-purpose chains. The digital asset management and financial services company says this would help address diverse scalability and usability needs.

    FIT21 Act

  • HashKey also predicts regulatory breakthroughs under the FIT21 Act. It pegs this expectation to the Trump administration, which is predicted to approve the bill. Based on the report, such an outcome would help accelerate cryptocurrency legalization globally.

Simultaneously, non-compliant crypto businesses are likely to face intensified regulatory scrutiny.

    Bitcoin Reserve

The firm also says Bitcoin could emerge as a strategic reserve asset supporting the US dollar. It joins VanEck, which recently argued that a strategic Bitcoin reserve could slash US debt by 36% by 2050.

Meanwhile, HashKey holds that the US may leverage this role to stabilize its currency and maintain demand for US Treasury bonds.

    New ETF Approvals

HashKey also predicts the approval of new ETFs, citing assets like Solana (SOL) and XRP to attract substantial institutional investment into the crypto market. Nevertheless, recent reports indicate that Litecoin (LTC) could make faster headway in this regard.

  • “We had heard chatter that the Litecoin S-1 had gotten comments back from SEC. This looks to confirm that which bodes well for our prediction that Litecoin is most likely to be the next coin approved,” said ETF expert Eric Balchunas.

Balchunas’ remarks followed Canary Capital’s recent move to amend its S-1 for its Litecoin ETF filing. The amendment comes three months after the firm’s initial expression of interest in the financial instrument.

According to analysts, Litecoin, being a Bitcoin fork, is better positioned to receive a regulatory green light for its ETF under the regulator’s guidelines. Unlike most crypto assets, the SEC regards BTC as a commodity and may apply a similar rationale to LTC.

  • Crypto Stocks on the Rise

HashKey says crypto-themed stocks, including mining and infrastructure companies, could gain significant attention on the Nasdaq, which, according to the report, would drive a wave of investor interest.

Taken together, these 10 predictions highlight transformative developments in the crypto space, offering a glimpse into what may lie ahead. They paint a bullish picture for the crypto industry, with a particular focus on the increasing intersection of traditional and digital finance.

If these forecasts materialize, 2025 could mark a defining moment for the cryptocurrency market. Specifically, it could solidify the industry’s position as a cornerstone of the global financial system.
