EXCLUSIVE: Home Office urges staff to celebrate diversity and housing refugees in email sent after Southport attack

In the aftermath of the attack on Southport, a leaked Home Office email, seen by GB News, told staff they should celebrate diversity, be proud of housing asylum seekers and become allies.

The email was sent in reaction to the Southport attack where three young girls were killed and subsequently triggered protests and unrest across the country.

The leaked email from a senior Home Office civil servant following the deadly Southport attack urges officials to celebrate diversity, be proud of their work housing asylum seekers and to “show allyship”, GB News can reveal.

Daniel Hobbs, the Home Office Director General of the Migration and Borders Group, wrote to staff following the murder of three children in Southport.

Southport Vigil

Hobbs wrote that “It is the Home Office's responsibility to keep citizens safe and our country secure”, before telling staff to “be proud of [their] efforts… including those in Homeland Security, Public Safety, those working to provide safe accommodation to asylum seekers who would otherwise be destitute, and the crisis response teams”.

Rupert Lowe, the Reform Party MP, told GB News: “This email is frighteningly tone deaf and does not recognise the Home Office's total failure to protect Britain’s borders.”

“Home Office leadership must be held to account. They have nothing to be proud of, and have objectively failed.”

Robert Bates, Director of research at the Centre for Migration Control, said: “Let’s be clear, the Home Office has nothing to be proud of when it comes to their handling of the asylum system.”

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Southport MP Patrick Hurley

“It has allowed criminals, terrorists and violent individuals to flood into our country. The Clapham chemical attack rests solely on their shoulders, as does the petty crime and fear which exists in every community currently playing host to a migrant hotel.”

The senior mandarin, who is a Home Office “Faith and Belief Champion”, said officials should be proud of their working with the police “to bring safety and order back to our communities, and punish those responsible for this disorder”.

Hobbs’ memo on the attack also boasted that “The Home Office is one of the most diverse [departments] in the Civil Service - something which we celebrate.”

He continued: “The inclusion, understanding and celebration of our many faiths and beliefs and diverse cultures and experiences is an important part of how we effectively deliver our services and develop policies to help protect our communities.”

Mr Bates continued: “The country is literally on fire, and tens of millions of people are having their legitimate concerns about illegal and legal migration ignored, whilst the Home Office is patting itself on the back for being the most diverse department in the civil service.”

“This department has become nothing more than a self-indulgent social club for diversity activists. It needs to be axed.”

Hobbs urged colleagues to “show allyship by learning more about the diversity of our department and supporting colleagues, particularly within the team and office in which you work”.

Anti-immigration protests have spread across Britain following the killing of three children in Southport.

The Faith and Belief “Champion”, a voluntary role held by civil servants to promote diversity ideology to other staff, pointed towards a Home Office group called “The NETWORK” for ethnic minority staff.

Hobbs wrote: “Our Faith & Belief networks and champions have three aims which feel very relevant at the present time:

"1. Amplify our dialogue about faith and belief - bringing faith and belief out of the shadows and ensuring they are a key part of our work on inclusion.

"2. Celebrating our shared values and the opportunities we have to work together - bringing our wider values into the workplace and finding opportunities to work together on a shared purpose.

"3. Facilitate difficult conversations where we need to - reflecting on where there are tensions we need to resolve and manage, and responding in ways which build mutual understanding and respect.

"The NETWORK is committed to promoting equality within the Home Office and aims to support colleagues from minority ethnic communities.”

Mr Lowe, the Reform politician, continued: “Home Office bureaucrats need to forget ‘allyship’ and the department’s ‘diversity’, and focus on the day job. Protecting our borders, therefore protecting the British people.”

“We don’t need ‘faith and belief champions’ across the Home Office, we need qualified individuals who understand the need for stronger border security. This woke nonsense has spread across the public sector like wildfire and it must be rooted out.”

“It fills me with dread that this blatant activism has been so welcomed and encouraged at the highest levels of the civil service. A total overhaul is required of the entire Whitehall system.”

The memo from Hobbs also condemned the Southport attack and the subsequent protests and riots, saying after the massacre: “All of us would have expected to spend the week in reflection and mourning after that horrific attack, but instead, we have seen the most dreadful scenes of violence, intimidation and disorder from groups of people in several towns and cities around the country using the tragedy of Southport to commit acts of criminality and hate.”

Hobbs wrote that the responsibilities of “Faith and Belief Champions” in the Home Office include to “Amplify our dialogue about faith and belief”, “Celebrating our shared values” and to “Facilitate difficult conversations”.

Mr Bates of the Centre for Migration Control said: “They have done nothing to tackle the single biggest national security crisis this country has seen in recent times and have splurged billions of taxpayers money on luxury hotels and social activities for illegal migrants.”

“To hell with their talk of “allyship”. The country needs solutions. This cannot happen whilst Rycroft and Hobbs continue to lead the Home Office while Britain burns.”

The Home Office were approached for comment.

'Labour's housing plans have fallen flat - the Government aren't building where houses are needed most,' writes Brandon Lewis

It’s unsurprising that getting spades in the ground seems to be a top priority for Labour. And in fact, it’s a good thing for the country- politicians from all parties that have been prevaricating on the issue for far too long.

The result of this has been a housing deficit of 4.3 million homes. To put this in human terms, this means that our children and grandchildren are being forced to pay astronomical sums to rent a home, and are facing the possibility that they may never be able to afford to buy their own at all.

At first glance, the government appears to be taking a step in the right direction. Housing targets will be made binding again. It might be strange to read a Conservative making the case for any kind of target, but the crisis is now so acute they have become a necessary means to ensure that councils get building. I lean away from targets, I was never keen on them as Minister either, but we can put a duty on local authorities to ensure they are reflecting genuine local needs.

We had that and sadly we removed the requirement recently which means it opens the door to Labour to reimpose centrally set targets, that give less focus on local circumstances.

Local authorities will now be required to release green belt land if that’s the only way to meet these targets, it’s been suggested that they could do this by re-classifying what they are calling ‘grey belt’ land - that is, land that is technically green belt but is not very ‘green’ at all such as car parks and disused service stations. We must accept that building on some parts of the green belt, in this way, is necessary.

It is why I argued for a proper review of what is green belt so that we can properly protect real green greenbelt land whilst making non-green land more viable for development.

But on closer inspection of the details of Labour’s plans, they fall flat. The overall national house-building target might have risen, but the way that these targets are being calculated has also been changed.

Rather than concentrating on areas where new houses are needed most, Labour are instead increasing targets in the North, whilst cutting them in our big cities and in the South East.

The target in London, for example, has been cut from 100,000 to 80,000. With delivery already having dropped in London in recent years, pushing prices up further. That’s not to say that areas in the North don’t need new homes too.

But as Adam Smith Institute’s Cost of Rent Day calculations show, the affordability crisis is worse in London. Cost of Rent Day, the day on which, on average, someone stops paying their rent and starts keeping their money for themselves, fell on July 16, compared to the national average of May 5.

LATEST OPINION:

I have consistently said that we need to be building houses of all types and tenures, to the quality that people expect, in the places where people want to live. The latter point is vitally important.

Polling with JL Partners showed that 59 per cent wanted new homes to be built in existing communities rather than new ones- they want to stay near their friends, family and jobs.

If we don’t build in our major hubs, we’re both pricing out young people from remaining there, and preventing other talented young professionals from moving close to great job opportunities, with all the knock-on effects to the economy that that brings. Labour has also not considered what should be done on the demand side.

Just as it was wrong to stoke demand whilst not increasing supply, we cannot only enact supply-side reforms without matching help on the demand side. Developers need confidence that people will be able to buy their new houses, whilst we wait for prices to lower.

This support should concentrate on helping the first-time buyers who need it most. Right now, many of them are currently having to rely on the Bank of Mum and Dad- which helped 470,000 people on the housing ladder last year, which is demonstrably unfair for the thousands of young people who are less fortunate.

The Government could use the upcoming Budget to revive a Help to Buy scheme focused on first time buyers, or to cut Stamp Duty further, one of the most economically damaging taxes we have. Planning reform is absolutely vital- but as it stands Labour’s plan risks causing all of the economic and social distortions created by state planning, whilst still not helping people live where they want.

POLL OF THE DAY: Do you think Starmer is a good leader? VOTE NOW

Kier Starmer has held the keys to No10 for just 37 days but his time in power has already been marked by several pitfalls.

Ahead of his landslide General Election victory on July 4, the now-Prime Minister vowed his Government would be one of “actions, not words”.

One of the first major changes Starmer introduced was to housing, where he and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner pledged to build on the “grey belt” which they say is ripe for development.

On migration, Starmer axed the Tory’s Rwanda plan within days of seizing power and pledged to “smash the gangs” bringing illegal migrants across the Channel.

Aiming to tackle tax and the economy, Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves withdrew Winter Fuel Payments from almost 10 million pensioners, axed plans for new hospitals and transport projects, and announced there would be tax rises.

Issuing a warning just after Keir Starmer entered Downing Street, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said that “with a couple of exceptions”, the new Cabinet chosen by Starmer is “the most inexperienced people ever to have got into a British Cabinet”.

He added: “If you actually look at their life stories, their backgrounds and bear in mind, these are people making executive decisions that fundamentally affect people’s lives, I think they’re going to find it very, very hard.

“And I say that because the country faces some really fundamental problems, I suspect this Government could be in trouble pretty quickly.”

Do you think Starmer is a good leader? Vote now in the poll above and have your say in the comments below.

Starmer urged to ‘stand up to EU threats’ as Brexit ‘empowered’ UK to move away from ‘destructive’ bottom trawlers

Sir Keir Starmer has been urged to "stand up to the EU’s threats" and ban bottom trawling in a bid to make the most of the UK’s newfound Brexit freedoms.

The Prime Minister, who is hoping to reset relations with the Brussels bloc, faced renewed pressure to protect Britain’s fishing industry and marine protected areas today.

Pressure was mounted on Starmer after the European Commission threatened to take legal action against the UK over its decision to introduce biodiversity protection measures earlier this year.

The continental club was particularly aggrieved on behalf of its Danish fishermen after the UK shut down industrial sand eel fishing on environmental grounds.

Starmer urged to ‘stand up to EU threats’ as Brexit ‘empowered’ UK to move away from ‘destructive’ bottom trawlers

In a fresh call for Starmer to stand up to the EU, Conservative Environment Network’s deputy director John Flesher told GB News: "Brexit has empowered us to decide what happens in British waters.

"The Conservative Government rightly stopped bottom trawling in some marine protected areas (MPAs) and outright banned sand eel fishing in the North Sea.

"Taken together, these steps will protect the seabed and allow Britain’s native fish and bird populations to recover after years of damaging practices, largely by EU vessels.

"Recovering fish stocks will be good for British fishermen too, as numbers increase in the waters around protected areas.

"In threatening to take the UK to court for these measures, the EU is failing to respect our authority over our own waters.

"The EU talks a good talk on marine protection, but in challenging these steps it is arguing for bottom trawlers to destroy the seabed and release huge amounts of carbon emissions, and to keep overfishing sand eels, which are a critical food source for our nation’s puffins and kittiwakes."

POLITICS LATEST:

The fishing industry has not received the boost it anticipated

He added: "The Conservative legacy on seizing our Brexit benefits to protect nature is a proud one.

"Labour should stand up to the EU’s threats and go further by banning bottom trawling in all marine protected areas."

The European Commission said it had triggered the dispute settlement mechanism in the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement in April after the UK Government and devolved Scottish Government pushed ahead with its industrial sand eel fishing ban.

EU commissioner for environment, oceans and fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius said at the time: "The UK’s permanent closure of the sand eel fishery deprives EU vessels from fishing opportunities, but also impinges on basic commitments under the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement."

Sinkevičius added: "Measures are already in place to protect this important species, including by setting catches below the scientifically advised levels and closed areas for protecting seabirds."

However, the UK claimed its measures were necessary to safeguard vulnerable seabird populations.

Danish fishermen felt particularly aggrieved as the UK's fishing deal with the EU granted Copenhagen 90 per cent of the combined quota for the diminutive fish of around 160,000 tonnes, with approximately a third of this allocated to areas in UK waters.

Starmer

The UK's fishing communities decisively support leaving the Brussels bloc, with all of the constituencies covered by the largest fishing ports in England and Wales voting to leave the EU.

Estimates suggest around 90 per cent of the fishing community backed Brexit.

The wider public is also very supportive of ending bottom-trawl fishing.

Polling commissioned by the charity Oceana UK in June revealed that 81 per cent of adults in the UK believe bottom-trawl fishing should be banned in marine protected areas.

The practice includes dragging heavy metal gear and nets across seafloor habitats.

The net can be as large as football fields and weigh several tonnes.

Experts fear the practice could decimate UK habitats vital for marine health, such as reefs, kelp forests and seagrass meadows.

GB News has approached the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs for comment.

Keir Starmer ‘doesn’t care about Britain’: Ben Habib furiously scolds PM for ‘politicising’ riots

Ben Habib has hit out at the Prime Minister in a blistering rant about his response to the rioting that has gripped Britain.

Keir Starmer has promised a firm response to those causing chaos by vandalising property and attacking police officers, while also branding them as ‘far-right’.

Speaking on GB News, Habib said Starmer is ignoring the root cause of why people are so dismayed with the state of Britain.

“Categorising those who want to bring down immigration as ‘far-right’ is already categorising them in a negative way and undermining the argument”, he said.

“They’re saying that those who are pro-reducing immigration are racist. That is effectively what the head of the police and the Prime Minister are saying.

“They’re not listening to the root cause. We voted to reinstate our borders in 2016. We wanted to get rid of freedom of movement.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

“The reason Starmer is prepared to give succour on people who are equally as disgusting on his side of the debate is because they follow his belief and ideology.

“He wants to be in the EU. He does not want borders. He is fine with immigration because I don’t think Starmer cares about the nation state that is the United Kingdom.

“He and people of his disposition have some other kind of global construct in their head which they are championing.”

Starmer has reacted to the riots by ramping up the police presence and is hosting another emergency Cobra meeting with police chiefs tonight.

Southport riots and Keir Starmer

Metropolitan Police chief Sir Mark Rowley had earlier suggested the “show of force from the police” and “the show of unity from communities” together “defeated the challenges that we’ve seen”.

He also told the BBC his force had carried out dawn raids as they hunt for the most violent perpetrators of the disorder seen in Whitehall last week, about 70 per cent of whom he said had criminal backgrounds.

“We’ve got criminal damage, violence, weapons offences, football banning orders. These are criminal thugs,” Sir Mark said.

Stephens said many police officers had sustained injuries including “fractures, lesions and severe bruising” amid the at times “brutal and ferocious” unrest.

Rehabilitation and psychological support will be offered to officers because “for many, it was absolutely terrifying”, he added.

Dr David Starkey launches FURIOUS attack on Keir Starmer: 'Labour has lost the white working class FOREVER!'

Labour has lost the white working class ‘forever’ following Keir Starmer’s response to the country-wide protests, leading historian David Starkey has told GB News.

In an exclusive interview, Mr Starkey discussed the consequences of the anti-immigration protests for Labour, saying: “What we're seeing now is a movement in political tectonic plates, on a scale that has not taken place since the end of the First World War, and the replacement of the Liberal Party by the Labour Party.”

“What we've seen over the last few days is the end of the Labour Party's relationship with the white working class. It's finished. It's over. It's done.”

“That entire Red Wall, I will predict there will not be a single Labour seat left in it in the future general election.”

He continued: “The question is, where does that vote go?”

The famous historian, a former BBC television presenter, said that ordinarily the Conservative Party would benefit from the collapse in support for Labour, but questioned whether it was capable of doing so now.

He described the modern Labour Party as being representative of the managerial class in London, rather than the working classes.

Discussing the recent anti-immigration protests and riots in recent days, Mr Starkey said there had been two-tier policing, compared to recent protests involving ethnic minorities.

Keir Starmer

“The police handle them with kid gloves, as we saw in Rochdale, as we saw in Leeds,” he said.

“Not only do they handle them with kid gloves, they actually negotiate with them catastrophically as groups with community leaders.”

Mr Starkey described such community leaders as “unelected” and “self-generated”, and said there is “only one group” who are not allowed to have community leaders.

“And it's the white working class. And this is why they are rebelling.”

“They are not allowed to have a community.

“They're not allowed to have their community leaders consulted. Again, you see, there are huge questions behind this.”

Riots and protests have erupted across Britain following a knife attack resulting in the murder of three children in Southport.

Axel Rudakubana, born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with murder.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer promised rioters that they will face “the full force of the law” and blamed the "far-right" for violence.

However, some have criticised Sir Keir for his response to the unrest, including Reform Party leader Nigel Farage.

Mr Farage said in a video posted on social media: “The Prime Minister has misread this completely and utterly, just to call out the actions of the 'far-right' is to misunderstand two things.”

The Reform leader pointed out that Muslims have also been rioting and causing damage to vehicles.

Mr Farage said Sir Keir does not understand the “general feeling of dissatisfaction” among the British public due to mass immigration.

Elon Musk, the owner of X, formerly Twitter, wrote on his website that “civil war is inevitable” in the UK following the riots.

David Starkey disagreed with the X owner, saying that instead “we are going to see..sustained inter-ethnic conflict”.

He added: "I don't think it's full scale civil war, but I think we are going to see increasing clashes between ethnic groups, Hindu and Pakistani, Hindu, Muslim, and I'm afraid between whites and everybody else."

‘Government needs to learn how to lead or God knows what’s coming next,’ writes Michael Booker

I remember exactly where I was when I first realised the game was up for our so-called leaders.

It was April 2010, I was sat in the Daily Star newsroom when I looked up to see the breaking TV news that the then already beleaguered Prime Minister Gordon Brown had lurched headlong into crisis.

After being challenged on the economy and immigration by Labour voter Gillian Duffy during a General Election campaign visit he'd been picked up on microphone calling her a “bigoted woman”.

As you will probably recall the incident proved pivotal to the campaign and helped deliver a Tory/Lib Dem coalition Government.

Gordon Brown announces resignation in 2010

For me, it was remarkable for two reasons that are relevant to the chaos we're living through now.

Firstly the initial reaction to dismiss her concerns as “bigoted” echoes loudly today.

Duffy was no thuggish rioter but it wouldn't be too much of a stretch for some politicians these days to label her 'far-right'.

Secondly, and more importantly, the incident marked the start of a relentless cycle of events that no Government has been able to cope with since.

We've had people in Governement but, crucially, not in full control.

MORE AGENDA-SETTING OPINION:

Constantly reactive rather than proactive and on a back foot throughout the austerity and Brexit years, none of them have got to grips with the meat-grinding cycle of chaos.

Things really went nuts after David Cameron flounced off in a huff after the Brexit vote when he failed to read what was on the minds of an unhappy majority of British people.

The Tory party then managed to cheapen respect for the office of Prime Minister by embarking on years of vicious infighting and leader toppling that by the time of this year's election some insiders were likening their situation to being in series 9 of Big Brother with no one tuning into watch.

No wonder Rishi Sunak decided to stand there in the rain that day in May and call a vote - he knew his Government was a useless shower and could see no other way out.

And so here we are - 14 years on from that “bigoted woman” and we have another Government that shows no signs of being able to handle life in the meatgrinder of events.

They are already looking and sounding rattled by the horrific events of the past few weeks.

And what happens when you are rattled?

You start making mistakes.

David Cameron announced his resignation in 2016

How else can you explain the fact that the Home Secretary was allowed to end up on GMB this week interviewed by her husband?

Not a great look.

Unfortunate timing when - as pointed out by our Political Editor Christopher Hope - the Government has struggled to get anyone ministerial from the Home Office to appear on GB News since an election where thousands of our viewers and listeners voted Labour.

GB News speaks fearlessly for an ever-increasing number of people who want politicians to stop fighting among themselves, listen and then get a grip on the problems facing Britain.

But I've got a feeling that this Government - like the last lot - is ill-equipped to stay ahead of the relentless 24/7 grind.

Looking tough and announcing emergency Cobra and Cabinet meetings as well as “standing armies” and “full force of the law” looks to be reactive bluffing while they hope for calm to somehow take hold.

ITV GMB: Yvette Cooper and Ed Balls

Things will calm down - thankfully they always do, eventually.

But without sorting out the root causes means unfortunately the calm never lasts forever.

Add to that the fact they are being constantly destabilised by malevolent forces here and abroad, online and offline, they don't stand much of a chance.

And what does come next?

It hasn't hit fully yet but the world is on the verge of a technological revolution - I'm thinking in particular of AI - that will change the way we live and work forever.

Change for the better in many ways admittedly for some but for others...?

What happens when AI does leave more and more jobs redundant and there's been no societal provision for displaced workers to go?

We could shortly end up with a situation like The Grapes of Wrath-era of America in the 1930s when the tractors came to take the jobs of the tenant farmers - knocking down their homes in the process.

In John Steinbeck's book, the desperate workers sat “squatting in the dust”, “perplexed and figuring” before gathering up their suffering families and heading west to try and find a new promised land.

Unfortunately, if the new technological revolution does happen as predicted, many won't have the option of “heading west” for a new promised land.

Just more unhappy, distrustful people left to face an uncertain jobless future in their communities.

Our governing classes need to shape up and prove their worth soon or they'll get chewed up fast.

Leading Britain - and let's face it any country these days - looks to be an impossible job.

I'm sure most are well-meaning but the current political class - and I'm talking about EVERY party - doesn't appear up to the task.

Our leaders need to re-discover how to lead or God only knows what's coming next.

Illegal migrants could take advantage of ‘last chance’ to enter US as southern border tipped for ‘massive’ influx

Migrants could take advantage of one “last chance” to enter the US illegally, a former Republican nominee told GB News.

Genevieve Collins, the Texas leader for Americans For Prosperity which advocates for policy change in the US, explained the latest developments in the US migrant crisis and issued a warning that migrant crossings could surge ahead of the presidential election later this year.

Illegal border crossings have been slowly in decline since February having come from a record high of more than 300,000 in December 2023, according to the US Customs and Border Protection agency.

Collins said that Vice President Kamala Harris’s “laissez-faire” approach to the border crisis has so far allowed millions of people to enter the country.

Mirants walking towards US border, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump

She then added that if the Democratic nominee was to win the presidential election with her recently announced running mate, Tim Walz, her approach to managing the border would likely continue and allow for a surge in migrant numbers.

When asked whether there could be a surge in migrants as the US heads into the presidential elections, Collins suggested that the run-up to the Trump-Harris showdown could be a “last chance” for migrants to enter.

“This is just guesstimation here but as polls continue to evolve and Donald Trump begins to become the ascending candidate, if you're a citizen that lives in Guatemala, for example, and you're trying to get out, this might be between October and November 5 your last chance to really enter in droves.

“So we could see another massive migration pattern that comes through because everyone, I think, knows that if Donald Trump becomes president, the border is closed.”

US LATEST:

Genevieve Collins

Collins added that if Harris was elected instead, migrant numbers would continue to surge.

“I don't think that anyone believes that that same case [the border is closed] is true if Kamala Harris becomes president.

“And so you could see another surge to your point.”

When asked whether migrants “fear a Trump presidency”, Collins continued: “Yes. I think my personal opinion, Trump is very much feared because he's seen as an obstacle to illegal immigration.”

Delving further into why migrants would not choose to cross the border now, Collins explained that scorching temperatures are making the crossing dangerous.

She said: “It is 40C plus in South Texas.

“Right now we are in a seasonal migration pattern. It is like crossing the Sahara desert. It is so hot and it's just really unsafe for people to try to cross into this country.”

Kamala Harris

Earlier in the interview, Collins, who recently launched the Freedom is Bigger in Texas campaign to spotlight the Biden-Harris administration’s failures on a range of topics, expressed two concerns about the last four years of Government.

The first concern was rooted in the number of ‘getaway’ migrants, which she suggested could number in the millions and the second involved another four years of Harris’s open border policy.

“What signal does that continue to send to people in Central America, South America, who live in very terrible circumstances?” Collins questioned.

“That's a transfer signal that says, we have a presidential administration that is much more lax on immigration policy.

“So we might continue to see huge numbers of illegal immigration if Kamala Harris gets elected.”

Jacob Rees-Mogg outlines glaring issues with Enoch Powell’s 'Rivers of Blood' speech: 'Terrible'

Jacob Rees-Mogg has hit out at Enoch Powell’s ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech, branding it “terrible” and “incendiary”.

The speech was made by the Tory MP in 1968, criticising significant Commonwealth immigration to the United Kingdom.

Speaking to Steve Edginton, Jacob branded the speech “incendiary” and claimed it caused great harm to the overall cause.

“It is a really bad speech”, he said.

Jacob Rees-Mogg

“It made talking about immigration incredibly difficult for decades. It’s a blot on his career of an ineradicable kind.

“Its tone was excessively angry. It said things of debatable accuracy. Where was the evidence of dog mess being put through people’s letter boxes?

“It was absolutely intended to be incendiary. I think, what Powell achieved, was the exact opposite of what he was aiming to do.

“People could not talk politely about immigration because of the Rivers of Blood speech.”

Jacob proceeded to get his phone out and look at some of the quotes from the speech, saying the tone wasn’t even acceptable in the context of its time.

“The speech is so overstated, so hysterical in its tone. He damaged the argument”, he said.

Steven Edginton

“He says, ‘grinning pickaninny’, that’s the language. Now, come on. Even in 1968, referring to people in that way was deeply and gratuitously offensive.”

Jacob went on to discuss immigration as a whole, saying it has caused Britain huge troubles and action should be taken to drastically reduce it.

“I think there are enormous problems that mass migration has caused in terms of our culture”, he said.

“Mass migration has been carried out at such a rate that integration has been impossible.

Enoch Powell

“I think we need to stop immigration now. I don’t mean just get it down to 300,000 rather than the best part of a million, we need to get it down to the tens of thousands.

“It needs to be a small number to allow time for integration and cultural acclimatisation.

“We have created in this country areas where communities are carrying on with their culture rather than becoming part of the British culture.

“I believe that is very difficult.”

Jacob spoke ahead of the riots sparked by the deaths of three girls attending a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport.

Rioters have clashed with police officers as they make their anti-immigration sentiments known, with many stationing themselves outside migrant hotels.

UK riots ‘demonstrate multiculturalism isn’t working’ as Matt Goodwin hits out at Labour’s response

Pollster and political commentator Matt Goodwin has criticised the Government’s response to the riots, saying it feels heavy-handed towards one side of the argument.

He joined Michelle Dewberry to discuss the unrest in Britain sparked by the killing of three young girls who were attending a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

Speaking on GB News, he said the response from the Labour government looks “one-sided” after Keir Starmer blasted the violence on the streets of Britain.

“I think the first thing to say is everybody in this country I hope would condemn the violence and disorder”, he said.

Matt Goodwin and social unrest in Britain

“If you’re idiotic enough to be destroying your own local community then you deserve to feel the full force of the law. At the same time, it’s true that Keir Starmer and Labour have managed this badly.

“I would like to see Starmer condemn violence on all sides and talk less about far-right thuggery and more on criminality. The response looks one-sided.

“I would like to see us move on to have a more mature conversation on what is causing the unrest. I think what is happening for a lot of people is protest. They are protesting illegal migration, the collapse of our border and being lied to.

“I think they are protesting about an elite class in this country that doesn’t seem to want to keep them safe in their own country. That is where this tragedy has become a lightning rod for that sentiment.”

Ex-Jeremy Corbyn adviser James Schneider waded in on the discussion to hit out at the protests, but agreed with Goodwin that the Government has been “slow” in its response.

“These are organised, political and racist”, he said.

Marchers in Sunderland

“If people are being dragged out of their car because of the colour of their skin, that’s racist, and this is the character of these riots.

“It seems that the police in Southport were totally overwhelmed and things should have moved faster given these are not spontaneous uprisings. These are organised and are announced protests. We need policing to catch up.”

Goodwin continued by claiming the issues are reflective of a society that is struggling to contend with multiculturalism.

“I think Starmer and Yvette Cooper have been outflanked by events and people perceive the response to be one-sided”, he said.

Matt Goodwin, Michelle Dewberry and James Schneider

“There is an element of far-right thuggery, for sure. But I have also seen gangs storming around streets with weapons attacking people because of their race, because they are white. I think instances of ethnic conflict are clearly playing out on Britain’s streets.

“We are seeing how our model of multiculturalism isn’t working. You can’t look at Britain now and say ‘this model of multiculturalism is working’.”

Starmer vowed to “ramp up criminal justice” after an emergency Cobra meeting was called in the wake of a sixth day of disorder which saw rioters storm hotels housing asylum seekers.

Police clashed with crowds one week on from the Southport stabbings as the escalating violence continued over the weekend across the country.

So far, there have been 378 arrests since the violence broke out last week, with the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) warning the total was expected to rise each day.

Several suspects faced charges in court on Monday, as ministers and police chiefs descended on Westminster for the meeting setting out the response for the coming days in a bid to clamp down on further unrest.

Politics LIVE: Starmer to hold emergency Cobra meeting after weekend of violence saw rioters set fire to migrant hotels

Sir Keir Starmer will hold a Cobra meeting after violence continued across England over the weekend, No10 has confirmed.

The Prime Minister, who condemned the attack on a hotel housing asylum seekers in Rotherham, is promising rioters will feel the "full force of the law".

Unrest erupted across much of England over the weekend, including in Middlesbrough and Belfast.

Counter-protesters also gathered in major hotspots for confrontation, with up to 300 masked people shouting "Allahu Akbar" in Bolton.

A Cobra meeting is being held after a sixth day of violence following the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport.

The meeting will bring together ministers, civil servants, police and intelligence officers.

During a televised address on Sunday, Starmer warned protesters will "regret" taking part.

He said: "People in this country have a right to be safe, and yet we've seen Muslim communities targeted, attacks on mosques.

"Other minority communities singled out, Nazi salutes in the street, attacks on the police, wanton violence alongside racist rhetoric, so no, I won't shy away from calling it what it is: far-right thuggery."

Starmer must ignore Remainers and take 'full advantage' of Brexit, ex-No10 aide claims

Sir Keir Starmer must ignore Remainers wanting to rejoin the Single Market and take "full advantage" of Brexit, a former No10 adviser has claimed.

Dr Gerard Lyons, who advised Liz Truss during her brief stint in Downing Street, made the plea in a paper for the Centre for Policy Studies.

He said: “The Government needs to have the confidence to stand its ground on remaining outside of EU institutions.

“Rejoining the EU, its single market or its customs union will not provide a solution to the UK’s growth challenge and should not be part of any pro-growth strategy, despite the recent clamour from some for this.

"The major challenges facing the UK have long predated Brexit and solutions are not reliant on being in the EU.”

Nigel Farage 'appalled by riots' as he demands urgent Parliament recall: 'Need to debate population explosion'

Nigel Farage has called for MPs to return to Parliament as riots continued across England over the weekend.

Farage, 60, voiced his dismay at the unrest after hundreds of protesters were arrested and dozens of police officers were injured.

The Reform UK leader also accused officers of "two-tier policing" as he called for a debate on the "population explosion".

Farage is a 'friend' but I won't let him 'destroy' the Tory Party, says Patel

Priti Patel

Dame Priti Patel has vowed to now let her pal Nigel Farage "destroy" the Tory Party if she becomes Conservative leader on November 2.

The former Home Secretary, who joins six other leadership hopefuls, has been a "friend" of Farage for years.

Patel and Farage were recently snapped dancing at the 2023 Conservative Party Conference.

The pair, who now both represent Essex seats in the House of Commons, were also on the same side of the Brexit debate.

However, given Reform UK's breakthrough on July 4, Tory leadership hopefuls have been pushed to win back support from the populist party.

Patel told The Telegraph: "There’s a distinction between getting on with someone and recognising the fact that his mission was to destroy the Conservative Party. I will not allow that to happen."

The Witham MP's comments come after GB News reported that Reform UK's ex-deputy leader Ben Habib was supporting Patel's leadership bid.

'Conservative leadership hopefuls should be doing the day job Britain expects - not having their own ECHR debate'

The Home Secretary is on a mission to clear the backlog of asylum cases and in due course to reduce the number of illegals coming by small boats.

She has wisely warned us that the problem might get worse before it gets better. There are plenty of people coming this summer despite the government announcing new tougher action to stop the people trafficking gangs.

The public was angry with the Conservatives for failing to stop the small boats as promised. They were also angry about the huge increase in legal migration as well when the Conservative Manifesto promised to cut it, not treble it.

Conservatives slumped to 24 per cent of the vote partly owing to this. The public at the election were suspicious of Labour so their vote fell to just 34 per cent.

Part of the suspicion was over whether Labour would even want to get migration down and whether they did have a more effective way of stopping illegal entry.

The worry is now Labour will simply rush through consideration of asylum cases lodged by illegal arrivals by granting most of them asylum.

That of course speeds it up, avoiding all appeals and court cases from disappointed illegals and their army of lawyers out to thwart the government. It enables the government to cancel the accommodation barge and empty the hotels being used to house illegal arrivals.

Conservative Party leadership candidates

The problem is then twofold. A large number of people granted asylum will need permanent housing which Councils and Housing Associations do not have. Where is the government going to suddenly conjure up homes for tens of thousands of people? Where in the budget is the money for all the help and public services they will need? Will rents go up again?

More people will also be encouraged to come to the UK by illegal routes because they see they have a good chance of gaining permanent entry.

The UK will be seen as a softer touch, converting economic migrants into refugees if they turn up illegally and claim, or creating more ways to get in legally. The Home Office adds to the chances of this happening by calling illegals irregulars.

What will it do if its new policy does swell the small boat numbers? It may then seek to deal with more small boat arrivals by creating even more and easier legal routes of entry for people who may well be mainly economic migrants coming from safe countries.

In the past, Labour welcomed more migrants so why not do it again to claim you have stopped the illegals?

The Home Secretary is trying to recruit a Border Security Commander in addition to the Border Force Commander the previous government employed.

Is this really going to make a difference? Who is this superman or woman who can stop the boats where others failed?

Meanwhile, instead of concentrating on what the government is doing and explaining the dangers of their approach, the Conservative leadership candidates are having their own debate about the European Human Rights Treaty.

They are keeping an eye on Reform who want a referendum on pulling out of this Agreement. Some Conservatives think the UK should pull out to stop lawyers from winning cases under that umbrella for illegal migrants.

Some think that UK law can make a limited change to the operation of human rights, making clear in UK Statute that people who come illegally shall be removed from the country notwithstanding European law. Some One Nation Conservatives want to keep the Treaty as it is.

This was an important argument while in government when the Prime Minister backed the Rwanda scheme where the Human Rights Treaty threatened to prevent it from functioning.

Now the government has dropped the idea of sending illegals to a safe third country it is no longer a burning issue.

The Labour government is not going to offer a referendum so Reform's question is one for a General election in four to five years' time.

The Conservatives have to get used to the idea that the job of Opposition is to oppose the government where it gets things wrong, lets us down or breaks its word.

MORE FROM GBN MEMBERSHIP:

The Leadership contenders need to set out what they think Labour are up to.

Will they just grant lots of asylum applications to clear the backlogs? Will they boost legal migration by making it easier? How will the Opposition seek to get the government to meet its promises to crack down on illegal entry?

Will they set out the problems large-scale migration of all kinds is causing with housing shortages, school place and GP appointment pressures, and too little infrastructure?

Will they ask how an extra Commander makes a difference and when will he or she be appointed?

Try doing the day job which Britain expects. There is a serious danger the government will make it easier to get into the UK, swelling numbers more.

No wonder the two main parties lost votes in this last election.

Donald Trump’s son recalls horrifying ‘punch to the stomach’ as he watched assassination attempt with his children: ’I felt rage’

Donald Trump’s son has spoken out on the “rage” he felt as he helplessly watched an assassination attempt on his father live on television.

Eric Trump, Donald’s second son, watched on with his children as his father came close to death.

The Republican presidential candidate was targeted by a gunman at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last month.

Speaking on GB News, Eric gave Ben Leo an insight into his initial reaction as his father’s speech descended into chaos.

Donald and Eric Trump

“I was on my couch with my kids. We were sitting there watching on live TV”, he said.

“I was working so I looked down on my computer and then I heard the shots. I’m familiar with that sound as I used to do shooting competitively and I instantly knew what it was.

“Then the rest was history. It was horrible. Aside from the fact that he was bleeding from the side of his face, he was wearing a dark suit so you couldn’t see if he had been hit in the torso.

“Also, there was a bunch of people around him. We don’t know if he got hit in the stomach, we didn’t know if he got hit in the chest and we didn’t know where it went on the head.

“It was a horrible feeling that hopefully no one will have to face again.”

Eric went on to claim that the incident has given his father a fresh perspective of life as it gave him a moment to reflect on “what’s important”.

Ben Leo

“People are fragile. You’re not invincible. That certainly weighs on him”, he said.

“There was certainly a different aura after that shooting. It was a punch to the stomach.

“I was sitting there with children on my lap and they watched the near assassination of their grandfather.

“There are people who would walk to the end of the world for the man, they love him. They love our country, our constitution and they want what is best for America.”

Trump said on his Truth Social media platform that a bullet had “pierced” his ear before he was dragged to the ground by Secret Service agents.

One person at the rally was killed – former fire chief Corey Comperatore – and two other spectators were critically injured, authorities said.

The gunman, 20-year-old nursing home employee and registered Republican Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by the Secret Service.

It was the most serious attempt to assassinate a US president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.

Suella Braverman hits out: Middle income families NEED childcare support as much as poor families

Suella Braverman spoke about the Conservatives being the 'party of family' and wanting to spend more time with her children in a conversation with Christopher Hope.

The former Home Secretary joined Christopher Hope in his weekly podcast with GB News, Chopper's Political Podcast.

Replying to Hope's question about there being a problem with fewer couples having children, Braverman said: "If we are seriously to be the party of family, we should be supporting those poorer families at the lower end of the income scale with their family support and with the children that they have.

"But it should be at all levels of the income scale. So middle income families, I do believe, do need more support with children and expanding their families through the tax regime."

Watch: Suella Braverman speaks on Conservative Party being the Party of families

LATEST FROM MEMBERSHIP:

Braverman said the party need to look at rewarding stay-at-home mums in the tax system explaining that parents will have children and almost immediately have to return to work as it is so expensive.

she added: "I do think we should be supporting mothers to stay at home if they want to, because being a stay at home parent is an invaluable right."

Hope said: "You're a mum of course," to which Braverman replied: "I am a mum. I took a very short period of maternity leave for six months and I went back to work."

Braverman continued: "I would love to be able to spend more time with my children. I will be able to this summer. I'm looking forward to actually spending much more time with my children."

The former Home Secretary went on to describe the family unit as a "bedrock of society" which there needs to be policies to support.

Comparing Britain's taxing system to other European countries, Braverman said: "If you look at other countries like Germany, they've unified the family unit.

"So you're taxed as a family unit as opposed to individual earners, which is what we do. And it becomes more punitive."

Braverman said she would like to "change the way we tax families" but that would need "a whole new computer system which is a big risk in this country."

Manchester Airport family launch official complaint against Andy Burnham over police video

A solicitor representing the family involved in the Manchester Airport incident said they had spoken to the IOPC with "regards to lodging a formal complaint against officers".

Protests erupted in Rochdale and Manchester city centre after a video circulated of a police officer allegedly kicking and stamping on a man as he lay face-down during an arrest at the airport on July 23.

A Greater Manchester Police constable was advised he is under criminal investigation for assault over the incident, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said last week.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham urged people to "take a step back" and allow the authorities to carry out their investigations after the Manchester Evening News published new footage thought to show the lead-up to the incident.

The footage was shared widely on social media

Fahir Amaaz, 19, Muhammad Amaad, 25, and their mother Shameem Akhtar, 56, said they wanted to understand "on what legal basis" Mayor Burnham was shown complete CCTV of the incident "and by whom".

Through their solicitor, Aamer Anwar, they said the family and its legal representatives should have been "provided with an opportunity to view footage before any politician."

They added that leaked footage "does not show exactly what the police did" and criticised "attempts by so-called 'police sources' to spin a false narrative or partial context."

Anwar said if family members had engaged in criminality, "then they must be subjected to due process".

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Andy Burnham

The video published by the Manchester Evening News appeared to show a group of people standing by ticket machines in terminal two (T2) and a man in a light blue outfit facing one of the machines. Male and female officers appeared to attempt to restrain two men who were involved in a series of strikes and punches before one man was tasered.

An officer and a man in blue appear to grapple until the latter lies still on the ground, face-down, and a woman kneels by his side. The officer then appears to kick and then stamp on his head, which was shown in the footage already widely circulated.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Anwar said: "I have now spoken to the IOPC with regards to lodging a formal complaint against officers from Greater Manchester Police...We also seek to understand on what legal basis Andy Burnham was shown the complete CCTV and by whom.

"The repeated attempts by so-called ‘police sources’ to spin a false narrative or partial context is deeply unhelpful to an IOPC investigation. Leaked footage does not show exactly what the police did, how the incident unfolded, nor the full conduct of officers in the aftermath of the incident in all parts of the airport, including after the arrests."

WATCH: Manchester Airport video shows violent scenes before man kicked in head

He continued: "As for leaking of CCTV, we understand that will also form part of their investigation, but whilst it may be blatantly obvious who would benefit from such a cynical and partial leak, proving who the individual or ‘institution’ is likely to be impossible."

Anwar added that the family expected all material relating to the incident and cameras of the aftermath to be retained, "especially those where the detainees were taken to in other areas of the airport".

The family and their solicitor will attend a press conference in Manchester on August 6.

US Secret Service takes full responsibility for failings surrounding Trump assassination attempt

The US Secret Service has taken full responsibility for the failures leading up to an attempt to assassinate Donald Trump.

The new acting chief said that local police in Pennsylvania should not be held responsible for security failures leading up to the attempt on the Republican presidential candidate last month.

Director Ronald Rowe told reporters: "In no way should any state or local agency supporting us in Butler on July 13 be held responsible for a Secret Service failure.

"This was a Secret Service failure. That roof line should have been covered - we should have had better eyes on (that)."

Republican candidate Donald Trump

In testimony to Congress earlier this week, Rowe had blamed the failure on local law enforcement.

The first shooting of a US president or major party candidate in more than four decades was a glaring security lapse that led last week to former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle's resignation under bipartisan congressional pressure.

The Secret Service, which is responsible for the protection of current and former U.S. presidents, faces a crisis after a gunman was able to fire on Trump from a roof overlooking the outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.

Officials said that 20-year-old Thomas Crooks fired the shots that wounded Trump's right ear, killed one rally attendee and wounded two others with an AR-15-style rifle, before law enforcement snipers shot and killed him.

LATEST US NEWS

Much of the criticism has focused on the failure to secure the roof of an industrial building where the gunman was perched about 150 yards (140 m) from the stage where Trump was speaking.

The rooftop was declared outside the Secret Service security perimeter for the event, a decision criticized by former agents and lawmakers.

Cheatle held a top security role at PepsiCo when Biden named her Secret Service director in 2022. She previously served 27 years in the agency. She took over following a series of scandals involving the Secret Service that scarred the reputation of an elite and insular agency.

Ten Secret Service agents lost their jobs after revelations they brought women, some of them prostitutes, back to their hotel rooms ahead of a trip to Colombia by then-President Barack Obama in 2012.

The agency also faced allegations that it erased text messages from around the time of the Janueary 6, 2021, attack on the US. Capitol.

Those messages were later sought by a congressional panel probing the riot.

Suella Braverman in brutal assessment of Tory failures as she takes swipe at own party

Conservative MP Suella Braverman has given a brutal assessment of the party's failure to embrace her ideas in a wide-ranging interview during Chopper's Political Podcast on GB News.

The former Home Secretary told Christopher Hope that the Conservatives "lost the trust" of the public ahead of the last election.

She explained: "We lost fundamentally because people didn't trust us anymore on the big issues like my immigration and taxation.

"We've got to be very honest about that. But I think there's a further reason our failure opened the door for another right-wing party to arise in the form of Reform with easy solutions.

Suella Braverman

She added: "I mean, we weren't even committing we weren't even trying on illegal migration.

"I mean my battles have been well chronicled inside Government and then outside Government I tried to campaign for cutting immigration but we didn't even, at the time of the election, commit to a number.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"I know the most we could muster was a cap on immigration, but that felt half-hearted because by that point we'd lost credibility.

"So we tried to campaign as right-wingers, but we had governed as socialists on taxation and immigration.

"People didn't believe it and that's why it lost its way on what it believes"

Braverman also said that she had given up all ambition about leading the Tory party. She said: "That will be it for me."

Rishi Sunak

She added: "I very much hope the leader we choose stays in post for a very long time. We do tend to chop and change and I think we've done that with too much frequency in recent years, which is one of the reasons the electorate got fed up with us."

She also said that contrary to speculation, she will not be joining Reform UK. "I'm not going to defect to Reform. And I hope I'm not driven out to Reform by my colleagues."

Braverman pointed to former Tory Lee Anderson who she said "should be sitting as a Conservative Member of Parliament".

SHe continued: "We should have more Conservative Members of Parliament because Reform should not have been the force that it was. And many hundreds, several, many of our MPs lost because of Reform.

Suella Braverman

"So we talk about a broad church. We should not be hounding out Conservatives, right-wingers, Eurosceptics, or people who want to stand up for our flag and our faith.

"I look at Lee Anderson. Lee Anderson is a good friend of mine, and it's a tragedy that we lost him to Reform. He's someone who speaks with an authentic voice that resonates with a lot of people in Britain."

Politics LIVE: Starmer to hold emergency meeting with police chiefs after second night of violence plagues Britain

Sir Keir Starmer looks set to hold an emergency meeting with senior police officers in Downing Street following violent scenes across England yesterday.

The Prime Minister will look to ease tensions after unrest in London, Hartlepool and Manchester.

Southport, where three children were killed in a brutal stabbing, also witnessed violence.

More than 100 people were arrested in London as demonstrators lobbed beer cans and glass bottles at police.

A group of angry protesters chanted: "We want our country back."

Eight people were also arrested in Hartlepool, Cleveland Police has confirmed.

Starmer is expected to praise officers for their "bravery" in dealing with the incident in Southport and its aftermath.

He will also encourage them to use their powers to “stop mindless violence in its tracks”.

Cleverly warns Tories need to get 'act together' amid Labour tax rise threat

James Cleverly

James Cleverly has warned the Tories need to get their "act together" amid concern Labour will hike taxes.

The former Home Secretary, who is standing to succeed Rishi Sunak as Conservative Party leader, said: "We said that Labour would raise taxes. Labour said they wouldn’t. We lost the election (our fault). Now Labour say they will raise taxes.

“[The Conservatives] need to get our act together, hold Labour to account and protect the British people from this Government.”

Starmer fears Badenoch the most, Labour bigwig claims

Kemi Badenoch

Sir Keir Starmer fears Kemi Badenoch more than any other Tory leadership hopeful, Labour Lord Peter Mandelson has claimed.

The Labour grandee, who voices much support for the Prime Minister, claimed the ex-Business Secretary's readiness to call out "wokery" sets her apart from her leadership rivals.

Mandelson said: "She is not afraid to speak her mind (although an occasional filter might be handy) or to call out the sort of ‘wokery’ many voters dislike. I noticed my companions turning in her direction."

However, the former European Commissioner for Trade also warned Tory fortunes could get even worse.

He wrote: “Next time, when people have got used to a Labour Government and grown to like Keir Starmer’s unpretentious style, his current vote-share may turn into a floor rather than a ceiling.

"Conservatives should not assume that things cannot get worse for them.”
